Lately, it seems like straightening brushes are everywhere! If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve wondered this:
Do hair straightening brushes really work?
Does an expensive straightening brush work better than a cheaper one?
Does a straightening brush work better than a straightening iron?
So today I tested it!
I bought 2 different brands of straightening brushes at 2 different price points. I bought the Amika “Polishing Perfection” straightening brush for $ 129.99 at Sephora, and then I bought the InStyler “Straight Up” ceramic straightening brush for $ 59.99 at ULTA.
To begin, I divided my hair into 2 sections in the middle. I took my hair in medium sized sections and brushed from root to tip. For easy comparison, I tested the Amika straightening brush on some hair pieces on the left side of the head and on the Instyler straightening brush on the right side of the head.
The smoothing brushes gave me a natural, loose wave, very similar to having my hair blown.
The regular hair straightener gave me a smooth, super straight look.
The flat iron trowel definitely wins! If I had to rate the Instyler straightening brush, I would give it 5 out of 10 points. He smoothed my hair, but not flat. I also did not like the string. If I had to rate the Amika straightening brush, I would give it a 6 out of 10. He did a better job of smoothing than the Instyler, and I liked the cable better. However, I had the feeling that the Amika had earned twice as much!
At the end I give these straightening brushes a “Fab” and “Fail”. Fab, because technically both straightening brushes did their job, but I give the failure because I personally would not recommend them. I’m still concerned with the straightener because it gives you a smooth, silky look.
